Notre Dame nose guard Ian Williams has been cleared to play in the Sun Bowl, the Chicago Tribune’s Brian Hamilton reports via twitter.
@ChiTribHamilton:
#NotreDame HC Brian Kelly: “Ian Williams practiced Saturday for us, moved around quite well, so he’s been cleared.”
Williams, a senior, sprained his MCL against Navy and was initially expected to miss the rest of the season, thereby ending his career as a Notre Dame football player. About a week ago, however, Kelly stated that Williams might be able to return for the USC game and, if not then, probably for the bowl game.
Williams was having a great year– perhaps the best of any defender not named Manti Te’o–before going down with the injury. Williams has recorded 37 tackles, two sacks, and an interception in just seven-and-one-quarter games.
Williams, who spoke with the media following the announcement that the Irish would play Miami in the Sun Bowl, had this to say regarding his health: (again, via @ChiTribHamilton)
#NotreDame NG Ian Williams: “I’m thinking I’m 100 percent right now I felt great in practice the other day and look forward to getting back”
