Football Report: Notre Dame headed to the Sun Bowl

After Uconn and former Notre Dame quarterback Zach Frazer hung on to beat South Florida, 19-16, Notre Dame is now likely headed to the Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas to renew its rivalry with Miami.

UPDATE: The Sun Bowl has confirmed that Notre Dame will play Miami at the Sun Bowl on December 31st at 2 p.m..

Notre Dame and Miami, which have had some heated, memorable games in the past, are expected to meet in the Hyundai Sun Bowl.

An official announcement will be made on Sunday.

Uconn secured the Big East’s BCS bid with the win, which means West Virginia, 9-3 and ranked No. 23 in the AP Poll, will nab the Champs Sports Bowl bid over Notre Dame.

“The last confirmation we had, the Champs (Sports) Bowl was going to take West Virginia,” longtime Sun Bowl football selection committee chairman John Folmer told the El Paso Times for Sunday’s editions.

Going into Saturday, Notre Dame seemed to be headed to one of three places: the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl in San Diego, the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, or the Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso. When Washington defeated Washington St., they secured their spot in the Holiday Bowl, while the Champs Sports Bowl appears ready to choose West Virginia, though they will not announce their choice until 8:30 Sunday night. “And how can they not? West Virginia is the Big East runner-up, West Virginia is 9-3, West Virginia is nationally ranked and West Virginia always travels well. That will leave us free to select Notre Dame and that’s what we plan to do.”

The Sun Bowl will be played at the Sun Bowl Stadium at 2 p.m. on December 31st. More to come after the official announcements.
