As good and kind of a man Coach Charlie Weis was, everyone knew that it was time for a fresh start for our football team. At the end of the 2009 season, Charlie was fired from the school’s team after a 35-27 record from 2005-2009.
Charlie was an excellent offensive mastermind. With Jimmy Clausen throwing for 6,894 yards in the quarterback’s last two years at the campus, scoring points was not a problem, allowing too many points was. I’m sure as you all remember the horrific Navy game in 2007 when we gave up an inexcusable 46 points and a loss in triple overtime to the Midshipmen (Credit to Navy for a brilliant game). But as we all know, defense wins Championships and that’s why we both had to go our separate ways.
When Notre Dame first fired Charlie Weis, they gave him a “termination payment” which was more than $6.6 million; however, Weis is still on the hook for “much smaller annual payments through December 2015″ according to the university’s tax documents looked over by the Chicago Tribune.
Charlie is now the offensive coordinator of the Florida Gators and I wish him the best of luck in the rest of his coaching career (unless the Irish face him of course).
