This upcoming football season brings hope to the Irish faithful. With the quarterback situation between Dayne Crist and Tommy Rees (which is a good thing) and the “new” defense coach Kelly is running, the Irish are expected to bring success slowly back to South Bend.
Coming into the season, I expect Notre Dame to be ranked in the top 25 before week one against South Florida. But I did not expect Athlon Sports to rank them as high as they did. They placed Notre Dame at number 6 on their preseason polls. Now it is early, probably too early to start talking about rankings, but one cannot be thrilled that anyone would put them at number 6 on their ranking charts.
Athlon Sports had this to say about their reasoning behind their placement:
“Sprinkle [Michael] Floyd back into the mix, maximize [Cierre} Wood’s abilities, and find a quarterback who can avoid the crucial mistake, and it looks like the Irish should be able to generate enough offense to accommodate an improving and suddenly depth-laden defense. The combination of [Brian] Kelly’s offensive track record and the improving defense could send the Irish in pursuit of a BCS bid in 2011.”
Now that’s what I call optimism. It just goes to show you what are people’s expectations next season for Notre Dame, including me.
