Notre Dame overtime anniversary

It was just a year ago today when Notre Dame had a chance to win their first lacrosse national championship. They were so close to it, sending the game into overtime but then lost it all in a quick 5 seconds. In 5 seconds our dreams were crushed. Scott Rodgers, our fantastic goalie at the time, in his senior year barely came up short, this is what he had to say about the play that ended it all:

“You don’t know what to look for when you’ve got a guy with a 6-foot pole on you.” “He can put it low like a catapult or go high. It’s exactly the kind of shot you don’t want to see if you’re a goalie.”

That describes what the last few seconds were for Scott. Cj Costabile, Dukes long pole face-off man, won quickly and charged right for the goal. Then Scott had to pick from a low catapult shot to a high shot, like he described above.
This is what happened:

Notre Dame vs. Duke overtime

Even Costabile didn’t know to shoot high or low, he explains what happened for him In This quote:

“Everyone else was shut off, so I just took the lane that was open,” Costabile said. “As to whether I put the shot high or low, I couldn’t tell you. I just let it rip.”

The sad one year anniversary of this play is today. I for one just want to forget all about it. What a great game it was for too fast of an ending, I was there in the stands and it was an awful feeling watching that play unfold live. I hope we can get duke in another championship to get our right ending.

Happy memorial day, and god bless the troops.
