The 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup is underway and the U.S. women look to win it all. It will be tough (Germany is favored) because there is home-field advantage for the Germans due to it being in Germany. Shannon Boxx, the starting midfielder for the USA, will be key for the side. Where did she play her college soccer? None other than Notre Dame.
Shannon played for the Irish from 1995-1998. She had a remarkable career at Notre Dame. Scoring 7 goals and 10 assists in her freshman year, Boxx lead the Irish to their first ever NCAA National Title for women’s soccer. From softmore year through her senior year, she scored a total of 32 goals and 47 assist. Boxx is tied for the most games as an Irish with 101 and was named to the All-Big East team in 1995, 1996, and 1997. She was an overall powerhouse in the middle of the field.
