Notre Dame was outplayed today by a very hungry South Florida in a game that took nearly 6 hours to complete due to first ever stadium evacuations at Notre Dame stadium. Here is my first reactions to the game. I will breakdown the game m0re in depth throughout this week. So stay tuned for a full analysis.
Tommy Rees stepped up- Despit the fact that we lost, Notre Dame and Brian Kelly learned something today. They learned that Tommy Rees deserves the starting job. Throwing 7 for 15 with just 95 yards in the first half, Brian Kelly decided to put Tommy in for the second half. Rees played much better going 24 for 34 with 296 passing yards. The biggest difference to me that stood out was with Dayne leading the offense, the Irish didn’t score any points. But, with Tommy Rees, they scored 20. Points is how you win games and you can’t score zero in a half and expect to win a lot of college football games.
Turnovers- Most college coaches will tell you that turnovers can make or break a game for you. That proved correct today. Giving up 5 turnovers is a key reason ND lost today. 2 fumbles were recovered by South Florida, Dayne Crist had an interception, and Tommy Rees had 2 picks. Credit to South Florida to not give up and turnovers and execute their game plan.
Not the result we were looking for today, but there is still a lot of football to be played. Notre dame is just going to have to regroup and prepare for a big rival game coming up next Saturday at Michigan.
