Tommy Rees knows he must improve his game

Notre Dame has been playing well with Tommy Rees as the starting quarterback. But his game needs to be elevated to the next level if Notre Dame thinks about winning the rest of their games.

Here’s what Brian Kelly had to say:

“You could put together an incredible highlight reel with Tommy Rees this year. And you could also put together a blooper film. And so it’s really being able to gain that consistency of play after play after play. And a lot of that is learning and experience, and that’s where we’re in.”

Tommy is still learning the system, so you have to understand that this is a process. He’s not Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, he’s a sophomore in college.

“At the end of the day, winning is the most important thing,” Tommy Rees explained. “But you need to stay productive and you can’t put yourself, you can’t put your team in situations where the game can go either way. As individual performances, you wanna be sharp, be good. But if you’re winning, you can’t complain too much. Like I said before, I’m pretty tough on myself. I know where I need to improve. I look forward to keep getting better and eliminating some of those mistakes.”

Here’s Tommy’s statistics so far this season (courtesy of ESPN).

2011 Season 93 140 988 7 6
Career 193 304 2094 19 14
Sat 9/24 @PITT W 15-12 24/41, 216 YDS,  TD
Sat 9/17 MSU W 31-13 18/26, 161 YDS,  TD
Sat 9/10 @MICH L 35-31 27/39, 315 YDS, 3 TD

Tommy’s biggest concern is the turnovers. 6 interceptions in three games is not what head coach Brian Kelly wants out of him. He wants an efficient quarterback that can produce points on the board. If there is anyone on the team that can do that, then it would be Rees.
