Led by star sophmore point guard Eric Adkins and Jack Cooley Notre Dame was able to get up to a huge first half lead. Syracuse had never down by more than eight points the whole season coming into this game. Notre Dame was up an amazing eighteen points in the first half. The Irish just were lighting it up in the first half. Not only did Notre Dame shoot terrifically, they also dominated the boards. Jack Cooley led the team with ten rebounds compared to syracuses leading rebounder with five. Jack Cooley was announced the top performer with a double double (17 points, 10 rebounds).
To go along with Notre Dame’s great performance, Syracuse had one of their worst games all year. They shot a mere 28% from the feild in the first half. Not only that, Triche and Jardine ,two of Syracuse’s best players, only combined for eight points. Once Syracuse fell behind early you could really begin to tell that ND was dominating the tempo of the game. Syracuse relies heavily on fast breakpoints. In the first half against ND, they had zero fasbreak points. They were forcing up low percentage three point shots that were just not falling. They went 7 for 23 from three point range tonight. Certainly, it was not up to Syracuse’s prestigious average.
In the end Notre Dame’s battle with Syracuse was not much of a challenge. In a game they were supposed to get crushed in, they protected their home court and beat Syracuse badly. The Irish will look to maintain all this momentum as they take on a scrpay Seton Hall team on the road on January 25. If the Irish want to win their going to need to get control of their emotions from this amazing win and focus on the game at hand.
