Notre Dame’s lacrosse team made a huge statement Saturday with a 10-7 road win at #11 Villanova. The Irish, ranked #4 in the country, clinched the #1 seed in the Big East tournament.
The Irish (10-1, 5-0) were down 4-0 with little time left in the 1st quarter. However, ND rallied with 8 straight goals, ultimately ending with a 10-3 run.
Notre Dame was led by senior attackman Sean Rogers, who had a game-high 4 points on 3 goals and 1 assist, while sophomore midfielder Jim Marlatt added 3 assists for the Irish. Notre Dame used 8 different goal scorers in the key win.
The defense held Villanova (8-5, 4-1) to 0 goals in the second and third quarters. The scoreless drought almost last 40 minutes. Junior goalie John Kemp made 10 saves for the Irish, who looked very good after a bad start to the game.
“I think we played about as poorly as we’ve played all year in the first quarter,” said Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan. “I’m proud that our guys settled down and played so well after that. I thought we played better in the second quarter, but not great. We obviously played very well in the second half. We felt like we were getting things offensively when we settled down and had good possessions. We maybe didn’t have enough patience early on but we gutted it out.” -und.com
