2012 was a surprising year for the Notre Dame Men’s Basketball program. No one expected for them to do what they did.

The Irish ended the season 22-12 overall. But more impressively, they went 13-5 in one of the more challenging conferences in the country.

Many people are wondering how the Irish did it. While some of it required luck, most it was the young talent brought in by head coach Mike Brey.

Last season is history now, so let’s take a look at the potential starters for next season.

Eric Atkins- Eric will be the starting point guard of this team. Last year, he led the team in minutes played. The only thing that scares me for Eric is his shooting. He is not a real threat when it comes to jump shooting, so teams can plan around that. If he can knock down shots next season, it’ll really open up the floor for the rest of the Irish.

Jerian Grant- Jerian Grant was a typical starter for Notre Dame last year, so I believe Mike Brey will look his way again. He is lethal from the 3 point line and should be even better than last year. I really look for him to be a leader of this team, commanding the ball in clutch situations.

Pat Connaughton- I wasn’t expecting Alex Dragicevich to transfer, but I’m not too disappointed to see him leave. Mainly because Connaughton is predicted to really help the Irish in all areas of the game, but especially on offense. I like his attitude and his work ethic, so next year should I expect to see him start.

Scott Martin- Jerian Grant is suppose to be a leader for the team next season, but Scott Martin should be the capitan of the Irish. If he is granted a 6th year of eligibility by the NCAA, his name alone should make coaches vote the Irish to be in the top 15 in the preseason polls.
