Reports surfaced yesterday that Notre Dame Linebacker recruit Danny Mattingly had decommitted from the Fighting Irish. However, these reports, as confirmed by multiple outlets, are untrue. Mattingly committed to Brian Kelly and the Notre Dame coaching staff on June 26th of this year.
Danny Mattingly is ranked as the 13th best Tight End in the country according to Rivals.com. Despite his ranking as a Tight End, Mattingly will likely play Outside Linebacker for the Fighting Irish in 2013.
These rumors are common. Generally, when these rumors occur there is some fire to the smoke. Decommitments are very common. But in this case, it appears that there is nothing to the rumor. Mattingly seems very upset by the story of his decommitment.
Recently, more concrete rumors have surfaced about Alex Anzalone. These rumors make the recruitment of Danny Mattingly more important than ever. Currently, the Fighting Irish have five Linebacker commitments: Jaylon Smith, Doug Randolph, Michael Deeb, Alex Anzalone and Danny Mattingly. Linebacker is a position of need. If the Irish lose two of these commitments, they would be reeling to recover.
However, there appears to be nothing to worry about now. In the crazy recruiting world, rumors are common place. Unfortunately, this one hurt someone who was innocent.
