Manti Te’o continued to collect on the awards circuit Thursday evening at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN. All awards are significant but these awards suggested that Te’o was the most outstanding player in college football. Theses victories go a long way to furthering Te’o's Heisman chances on Saturday night.
On Thursday, Te’o picked up the Walter Camp and Maxwell awards for being the nation’s top player. Many would say that these victories are an indicator that Te’o will win the Heisman on Saturday night. But last year, Stanford’s Andrew Luck won both awards but failed to pick up the Heisman Trophy when Baylor’s Robert Griffin III won. The year before Cam Newton collected all three awards (Walter Camp, Maxwell, Heisman).
In addition on Thursday night, Brian Kelly and Tyler Eifert collected their awards, which were already handed out prior to the ceremony. Now, Te’o and Kelly move on to NYC for the Heisman Trophy Presentation.
According to several reports, the race between Te’o and Manziel are neck and neck. It may be one the closest Heisman votes in history. Te’o has a lot of momentum going into Saturday though.
