ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles have interviewed with Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly for their vacant Head Coaching position. The Eagles fired long time Head Coach Andy Reid following the season. It had been rumored that Brian Kelly would be a candidate for numerous NFL positions. However, his name never seemed like a hot commodity. That distinction went to Oregon Coach Chip Kelly who declined multiple offers to stay in Eugene.
Would Kelly really leave for the NFL? Notre Dame fans probably think it is impossible to be spurned for any other postion in coaching world. This is as good as it gets, right? Kelly has always been a college man from his time at Assumption, to the days at Central Michigan to his BCS runs at Cincinnati.
Numerous things could be happening here. Kelly could be seeking a raise from Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick or he could be looking for a new challenge. To the outside viewer, it would appear that Kelly has yet to conquer this challenge. But the NFL and Super Bowl are the end goal for many Head Coaches.
Kelly has not spoken with 2013 or 2014 recruits about interviewing with the Eagles. One recruit said that he “didn’t think it was serious.” Brian Kelly could be leveraging his current deal for another one.
More coming soon from Notre Dame commitments. Stay tuned!
