Preview: Georgetown at Notre Dame

Notre Dame faces off against the Georgetown Hoyas this evening in the Purcell Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. The Fighting Irish have struggled in their past three games, only winning one. On Saturday, when the Irish played Rutgers, the Irish failed to put the Scarlet Knights away.

Georgetown is coming off of a loss to South Florida. The Hoyas dropped the 61-58 game on Saturday. The Hoyas are lead by Otto Porter Jr. He averages 14.3 points per game. Additionally, he has 7.6 rebounds per contest.

The Hoyas’ starting lineup features four players over 6’8”. This could be an issue for Notre Dame who has struggled against teams with length (St. Joseph’s). Georgetown ranks 55th in RPI and 52nd in BPI. To compare, the Irish rank 39th in RPI and 24th in BPI. Vegas favors Notre Dame by six points.

Georgetown has played inconsistently this year. The Hoyas lost in overtime to the Indiana Hoosier, 82-72. But, they were blown out by the Pitt Panthers, 73-45.

Notre Dame has an opportunity to get on track with this game. But, the challenge of going up against a long athletic team may be too much for the Fighting Irish. Tom Knight will need to step up in replacement of Forward Garrick Sherman. Can Jack Cooley be effective against the Hoyas frontline? If he cannot, will the Irish perimeter players be able to get open against players of longer length?

The Irish are averaging 74.6 points per game while allowing 61.7 points per contest. Georgetown is averaging 64.1 points and allowing 56.3 points per game. Notre Dame will struggle but will pull this game out late.

Prediction: Georgetown 62-Notre Dame 66
