What Are Brey's Expectations?

In June 2012, Notre Dame announced a ten year extension with their Head Basketball Coach Mike Brey that will run through 2022. Mike Brey’s best run at Notre Dame was the Sweet Sixteen in 2003. The Irish have landed in the Final Four once. This occurred in 1978. They have made it to the Elite Eight on several occasions (although the NCAA Tournament field used to be smaller). Therefore, it begs the question, what are Mike Brey’s expectations?

Obviously, Notre Dame is not a basketball school. The expectations for the basketball program are not the same as the football programs. Therefore, it would immediately eliminate National Titles, Final Fours and Elite Eights. But, Notre Dame has great facilities and recruits fairly well. Therefore, should the expectation be Sweet Sixteens and Third Round appearances?

Maybe the answer could come from similar school. What private, football prominent school is similar to Notre Dame? As far as the Athletic Programs go, it might be Southern California. That is strange but relatively true. The Trojans have landed in the Final Four twice (1940 & 1954). However, they are not a year by year participant in the NCAA Tournament.

Notre Dame cannot expect Brey to take the team any further than the tournament. For the most part, he has. He meets and exceeds his expectations. Brey has taken the Irish to the tournament eight out of his twelve years in South Bend. Of course, it should be a yearly expectation that he takes the Irish to the tournament. If he fails to do so after two years then he definitely should be on the hot-seat.
