Every year before the annual Blue/Gold Game, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame reveal “The Shirt”. The Shirt is one of the best-selling items affiliated with Notre Dame Athletics. From season to season, you see the student section at Irish home games filled with The Shirt. It’s one of the many traditions that surrounds Notre Dame Football. This year’s shirt: a disappointing front with a stellar back.
This season’s shirt features a very bland bold, white lettered front that says, “NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL 2013″, and pictured next to those words is a Rudy-like scene of a Irish player being carried off the field. The back is the eye-catcher with “The Shirt”. Towards the collar of the shirt, a Notre Dame logo is seen and below the logo reads, “ON THE HEELS OF LEGENDS”. Working your way down the shirt, the finish to the quote reads, “WE RISE TO VICTORY”. Featured on the back are Notre Dame legends: 1947 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Lujack, 1990 Heisman Trophy runner-up Raghib “Rocket” Ismail, 1987 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown and 1953 Heisman Trophy winner John Lattner.
Thoughts: Personally, I love “The Shirt”. Like I mentioned earlier, it’s one of Notre Dame many traditions that make this university so special. This season’s shirt, I gave it two thumbs down when I saw Coach Kelly wearing it at the unveiling. Then I saw the back of the shirt, and it’s safe to say, I changed my mind. The back makes this shirt. For me personally, The Rocket is my favorite Notre Dame legend. I still argue to this day that Raghib is the most explosive player in the history of college football. So all in all, I would say the front needs some “pizzazz”, but the back is wonderful.
