Notre Dame landed a commitment from Illinois Tight End Nic Weishar on Tuesday night. He is the 7th commitment for the Fighting Irish in the 2014 class, which is known as the Golden Army. Weishar hails from Marist High School in Chicago, Illinois.
Tuesday saw the commitments of Jeb Blazevich and Ian Bunting. Blazevich committed to Georgia and Bunting to Michigan. This begs the question as to whether Notre Dame was waiting on those players to decide first. After they fell by the wayside, Weishar was free to commit to Notre Dame.
This does not mean that Notre Dame got an average player at Tight End. Weishar is 220th best player and 5th best Tight End according to 247Sports.com. He is the 13th best at his position according to Rivals.
Weishar checks in at 6’5″ 215lbs. He is definitely a weapon in the passing game. In 2011, Weishar caught 77 passes for 1160 yards and 13 touchdowns. In his Junior year, Weishar had 1100 yards receiving on 89 receptions and 5 touchdowns.
Notre Dame appears to be utilizing Tight Ends who can be split out wide in their Offense. Last year, Notre Dame landed Mike Heuerman and Durham Smythe. These prospects showed at the High School level the ability to catch the ball well. Tyler Eifert gave the Offense flexibility that the coaches definitely liked. They are looking for more players like that. Tyler Eiferts do not grow on trees but not everyone has to be as good. Half is good would be pretty good.
