Notre Dame needs to land bodies at the Defensive End position in the 2014 recruiting class. With the loss of Eddie Vanderdoes and possible early departure of Stephon Tuitt, Notre Dame needs to land several players. Obviously, the Irish want to land the best players possible but filling the roster is also important. With the strength and conditioning program that Notre Dame has, many solid players can be made into great contributors.
Matt Nelson is the typical “big skill” player that Kelly has recruited in his 4 years at Notre Dame. At 6-8 250, he could play several positions at the next level. He could be a Tight End, Defensive End or Offensive Tackle. Notre Dame is looking at him as a Defensive End first. But, he certainly has the flexibility to make a Troy Niklas type change in his career at Notre Dame.
Nelson will visit Notre Dame on June 7th. He currently has 3 leaders: Iowa, Notre Dame and Stanford. As a resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Nelson has seen Iowa’s campus several times. He has yet to see the other two. The first impression of Notre Dame will be important.
Whether or not he would commit maintains to be seen. Nelson has already narrowed his choices to three schools. This means he probably wants to see all of them. An unofficial or official visit to Stanford is still probably in the works.
