Prospect Evaluation: Notre Dame Target Darius West

Notre Dame recently offered the Defensive Back out of Lima, Ohio. They instantly became a favorite to land the 4-star prospect. If they are able to land a verbal commitment from West, what kind of player will they be landing?

West is not a physically imposing player. He is listed at 6′ 195lbs. This appears to be a very ambitious estimate for him. Notre Dame is recruiting him to play Cornerback. With his size, he will not have any issue playing that position. However, he probably does not fit the profile of the big Cornerback that Notre Dame has looked at in the past.

Pass Coverage

West’s recovery speed is extremely impressive. When watching his highlight tape, it appears he will close and get the hand on the ball or make a tackle. But, with his excellent recovery speed, he closes and typically makes an interception. This attribute, along with his ball skills, are what makes him an solid pass defender.

Run Stopping Ability

There were not a lot of plays where West stuck his head in against the run. However, he did make a few plays closing against Quarterbacks and Running Backs. He does not appear to be afraid to make the tackle. But, he is also not to be mistaken as a heavy hitter either.

West is a solid 3-star or 4-star prospect. The competition he plays against in rural Ohio is not the greatest. However, he has all the skills needed to develop into a solid Cornerback or Free Safety after his Sophomore year.
