Brian Kelly said in a statement that Eddie Vanderdoes would not be released from his letter of intent to protect the integrity of the program. Many coaches and athletic directors had contacted Notre Dame and Florida State, who is in a similar situation with OLB Matthew Thomas, to ask them not to release the student athletes from their letters of intent. Many had worried that this would have created a dangerous precedent where every Freshman essentially would be a free agent until they were on campus.

Brain Kelly said via a statement issued by the University:

“Eddie Vanderdoes will not be attending the University of Notre Dame. We did not release him from his national letter of intent in order to protect the integrity of that very important program, but we have worked with the Vanderdoes family so that Eddie can continue his education this fall at a school closer to his home. We understand Eddie’s interest in remaining closer to his family and wish him well.”

The two parties seemed to have split amicably. Although it is a huge loss for the Fighting Irish, they seem to have avoided a huge blow on the recruiting trail that could have occurred if the two sides fought over the release.
