2013 Impact Freshman: #8 Steve Elmer

This is a continuation of SlapTheSign.com’s Top 10 list of the Impact Freshman for the 2013 season.

Steve Elmer may end up being the first player taken from this class in the NFL Draft but he appears at #8 on our list. This is simply because the opportunity is lower for Elmer than other players. Veteran Tackles Zack Martin and Christian Lombard will start ahead of the early-enrollee. However, Elmer’s sheer talent will get him on the field in Special Teams and in Notre Dame’s “two-deep”.

Currently, Elmer may be as high as the 7th best Linemen on Notre Dame’s team behind the current starting 5 and backup swingman Ronnie Stanley. Elmer has shown himself physically prepared to played against elite college talent. He will most likely make his way onto Notre Dame’s field goal and punt teams. He may play if the Irish have a big lead as a backup as well.

However, his impact may be more subtle. Last year, the Irish were not able to adequately prepare for their game against Alabama because of the lack up depth along the Offensive Line. Elmer gives the Irish quality depth in their “two-deep”. He may show himself well in practice and bowl preparation. This may have a bigger impact than anything he will do on the field this year.
