To redshirt or not redshirt? That is the question for Notre Dame Freshman Quarterback Malik Zaire. Several sources have claimed completely different things.
Irish Sport Daily Editor Mike Frank stated on ISD Power Hour that the Irish planned to redshirt Zaire this season. A source closely connected to Alter High School’s football program claimed that he will be starting by the end of the season.
There are excellent reasons for both plans of action. If Everett Golson returns next year, he will have two years of eligibility remaining. In order to ensure that Zaire does not transfer, they need to make ensure he will have enough playing time remaining after Golson is done playing. However, if the Irish needs Zaire next year, it would be better if he gained some playing experience this year.
Based on his comments in an interview with Slap the Sign last November, Zaire will not lay down this summer and fall. He expects to compete for playing time. He said last November, “I’m ready to dive in and compete.”
There is no doubt that when the Irish take the field against Temple Tommy Rees will be the Quarterback. But, what if Notre Dame does not start well? It is hard to see Notre Dame going with Andrew Hendrix as the starter at this point. But, Zaire is a possibility. Clarity should come when Brian Kelly addresses the media in a few days.
