Injury Bug Hits Irish

Last year, injuries severely hampered the depth of the team. Cornerback Lo Wood and Safety Jamoris Slaughter were out for the season before the end of September. Today, the injury bug hit the Fighting Irish again.

Danny Spond missed the first two games of the 2012 season with severe migraines. The migraines were originally diagnosed as concussions. However, he went on to collect 38 tackles and 1 interception. Spond did much of the dirty work on a defense that allowed 10.3 points per game. For undisclosed medical reasons, Spond will no longer be playing football. Kelly said that Spond and his family will be releasing a statement on the specifics of his decision.

The depth of the Defensive Line also took a hit when Tony Springmann injured his knee. There is no definitive answer on whether Tony Springmann is out for the year. If Springmann is out, Notre Dame will only have 4 players who have quality experience. Defensive Ends Jarron Jones and Issac Rochell must step up to give the Irish quality depth.

Will Mahone, who is competing for a Running Back position, has a high ankle sprain. However, the position has a lot of depth. He is not needed as much as Springmann or Spond.
