Notre Dame fans have great expectations for each and every game. Winning is not enough for fans. It definitely was not enough for fans on Saturday as the Irish won an ugly game against Michigan State 17-13. Despite the lack of style points, the Irish played much better than they did against Purdue. Here are the positives that the Fighting Irish will take away from their third victory:
Depth of Wide Receiver Talent
Outside of South Bend, everyone probably knows TJ Jones and DaVaris Daniels. However, they probably do not know the names of Corey Robinson and Will Fuller. These players combined for 91 yards receiving against a solid Michigan State secondary. They were also the top two leaders on Saturday for yards. Their development will help the Irish Offense tremendously because they will take pressure off of Daniels and Jones. It will be virtually impossible to scheme around such talent. When Chris Brown is added to the mix, the Irish have five viable players at the Receiver position.
Improved Pass Rush
Notre Dame had 1 sack and 4 Quarterback Hurries on Saturday. The improved pass rush helped Notre Dame’s secondary cover the pass. Connor Cook completed 14 of 34 passes. Additionally, the pressure on Michigan State’s trick play caused the the pass to be intercepted.
Notre Dame’s Defense limited Michigan State’s Offense on Saturday by having it’s best tackling performance this season. The better tackling made the Irish Defense seem like last year’s Defense more than this year’s.
10 Straight Home Win
For the first time since 1999, Notre Dame has won 10 straight home games. The Irish can continue to gain confidence about their ability to win any football game at home.
