As first reported by Keith Arnold of NBC’s Inside the Irish blog page, Louis Nix has been ruled out for the game against Air Force and will not travel with the team. Nix who injured his shoulder last weekend against USC was ruled out because of a lingering tendonitis problem in his knee. Brian Kelly during his Tuesday press conference indicated that Nix would be brought along slowly because of the shoulder, but it looks like his knee had other ideas.
Also reported by Keith Arnold, starting RG Christian Lombard had surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back and he is out for the rest of the season. Lombard had struggled this season and seemed to develop too much of forward lean that was exploited by defensive tackles. It’s safe to say that Lombard’s form was directly effected by his back (as anyone with a back injury can attest). Lombard has another season with the Irish, so we hope he recovers at full strength from a tricky recovery. Kelly has decided that Steve Elmer will start at right guard against Air Force. The Irish offensive line now has three new starters this season with Ronnie Stanley, Nick Martin and Elmer.
