2014 Notre Dame Football Recruiting
CB Nick Watkins of Bishop Dunne High School in Texas has committed to Notre Dame. A 4-star cornerback who is rated 11 best defensive back on 247sports and Rivals.com has outstanding speed (4.49 40-time) and excellent vision. Waktins, currently listed by Rivals at 6’1″ 189lbs could immediately contribute to Notre Dame on special teams and defense.
Given the comments reported on Bleacher Report by Alex Kay from Waktin’s coach Marcus Johnson, it’s clear that Watkins chose Notre Dame because of the institution’s high academic standard and the opportunities presented by the university’s business school. A refreshing thought that recruits are having the foresight to understand what Notre Dame offers outside the football field. The You Tube video of Jay Hayes, another Irish recruit, giving his pitch to Thomas Holley, a close friend and current Irish target, only emphasize how recruits to Notre Dame have more in mind than football. I am also sure that last year’s number one ranking in both football and graduation rate gave parents enough to push their kids to, at the very least, look at Notre Dame.
Analysts have predicted that Watkins teammate and fellow defensive back Payton Hendrix will also committ to the Irish. With S JuJu Smith in the Irish’s sights, Notre Dame could be looking at one of their best classes of defensive back recruits in quite sometime. Add in the play of freshmen Cole Luke and Max Redfield, and fans should be happy about the future of a secondary that just a year ago was seriously in doubt.
