Notre Dame Football Recruiting

Notre Dame received one of two commitments on Sunday from Linebacker Nile Sykes of Oak Park, Illinois. Sykes fills a huge need for the Fighting Irish at the Linebacker position. It is believed that Sykes will begin his Notre Dame career at the Inside Linebacker position.

Sykes is ranked as the 34rd best Linebacker in the nation according to 247Sports. Additionally, he is rated as a 3-star recruit.

He moved from Defensive End to Linebacker when he transferred to his current school Montini Catholic. As solid season at Linebacker drew the attention of many BCS level schools including Notre Dame who offered on November 14th. Sykes received offers from Syracuse, Missouri, Illinois and others.

Because of the lack of depth at the Inside Linebacker spot, Sykes could be lining up as a starter against Rice (if it is indeed them) in the first game of the season. Sykes is not the highly touted prospect that Nyles Morgan is. However, because he just switched to Linebacker, he is just brushing the surface of who he can be as a player. Playing him earlier is probably not ideal for Notre Dame. Utilizing him as a two to three year player seems more realistic.
