The number of letters recruits receive have increased exponentially since the NCAA deregulated its rules on mailings. In 2012, Alabama sent 105 letters to Running Back Alvin Kamara. But, in 2013, the Irish have struck back in emphatic fashion. On November 20th, the Irish sent Defensive Tackle prospect Matt Elam 262 letters, eclipsing the previous Kamara’s mark by 151 letters.

Today, Notre Dame dumped 477 pieces of mail on several recruits including Linebacker prospect Nyles Morgan, Tight End prospect Tyler Luatua, Outside Linebacker prospect Kolin Hill and Tight End prospect Dalton Shultz. The number of 477 represents the number of NFL Draft picks.

Dalton Shultz made a YouTube video about his “Pot of Gold”.

Many have questioned the effectiveness of this tactic. The amount of mail seems pointless and excessive. However, the recruits really seem to enjoy the attention that it brings to them. Morgan and Shultz took to social media to discuss what they had received in the mail. At the end of the day, it only matters what the recruits think. If this assists in getting excellent players to South Bend then they should send as many letters as it requires.
