2014 Notre Dame Football Recruiting
5-star Elizabethtown (KY) Defensive Tackle Matt Elam eliminated Notre Dame on Thursday. He announced that he will choose between Alabama and in-state Kentucky.
Elam visited Notre Dame on October 19th for the USC game. At that time, Notre Dame gained a lot of ground on Alabama and Kentucky.
Recently, Elam announced that he would announce between Alabama, Kentucky and Notre Dame at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. But, something has changed between now and then.
Elam is consider a 5-star prospect by 247Sports. One of the things that Elam possess that no other prospect does is incredible size. He checks in at 6’6″ and tips the scales at around 350 lbs.
There has been no explanation as to why Elam eliminated Notre Dame. However, it does not come as a huge surprise. At best, it seemed like the Irish were running second when no real chance to make up ground. Apparently, 739 letters (477 and 262 in two “pots”) could not even win in this battle.
Between Kentucky and Alabama, the Wildcats are probably the leader. It seems unlikely that Elam would want to play at Alabama because they already have several commitments along the Defensive Line. If he went to Kentucky, he could play early and be a hometown hero.
The Irish are still lacking their prototypical Nose Guard for the future. It may not matter when Notre Dame brings in a new Defensive Coordinator but regardless, the Irish have missed again.
