Notre Dame Football Recruiting: Matt Elam Eliminates Notre Dame

2014 Notre Dame Football Recruiting

5-star Elizabethtown (KY) Defensive Tackle Matt Elam eliminated Notre Dame on Thursday. He announced that he will choose between Alabama and in-state Kentucky.

Elam visited Notre Dame on October 19th for the USC game. At that time, Notre Dame gained a lot of ground on Alabama and Kentucky.

Recently, Elam announced that he would announce between Alabama, Kentucky and Notre Dame at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. But, something has changed between now and then.

Elam is consider a 5-star prospect by 247Sports. One of the things that Elam possess that no other prospect does is incredible size. He checks in at 6’6″ and tips the scales at around 350 lbs.

There has been no explanation as to why Elam eliminated Notre Dame. However, it does not come as a huge surprise. At best, it seemed like the Irish were running second when no real chance to make up ground. Apparently, 739 letters (477 and 262 in two “pots”) could not even win in this battle.

Between Kentucky and Alabama, the Wildcats are probably the leader. It seems unlikely that Elam would want to play at Alabama because they already have several commitments along the Defensive Line. If he went to Kentucky, he could play early and be a hometown hero.

The Irish are still lacking their prototypical Nose Guard for the future. It may not matter when Notre Dame brings in a new Defensive Coordinator but regardless, the Irish have missed again.

Notre Dame recruits student-athletes. Despite the 739 letters Elam didn’t qualify and his offer was based upon taking the proper steps to do so. When he didn’t do so, both sides agreed to drop the Irish from the list of teams he is considering. Rather than report that, ND allows recruits to simply make a similar announcement . You failed to include that it was a joint decision.

“The Irish have missed again” – what??

Stop it. You make it sound like an Irish failure. If you haven’t taken the time to see some of the things the kid has posted on Twitter, you should (especially the photos). ND is better off without him. It would be Aaron Lynch 2.0. I won’t say they “dodged a bullet” or that the kid wouldn’t mature with 4-5 years of college, but he appears to be a selfish brat who was going to get a huge dose of reality at the college level.

As for ND? They don’t have a Louis Nix waiting in the wings but who does? Jarron Jones has proven this year that he is competent as a NG and even has a proclivity for blocking kicks. It’s also not like Jones was just some schmuck they called in off the street – he was coveted by other programs too as a recruit. ND will be fine.

My money says he goes to Kentucky, for the reasons you stated in your article. I don’t think he will like waiting behind superior talents at Alabama.
