George Atkinson III will catch a lot of flack for his decision to go pro prior to his Senior season but it is was really his best option. A return or transfer all had significant drawbacks.

If he returned to South Bend, he would have needed to beat out Sophomore Tarean Folston, Redshirt Freshman Greg Bryant, Senior Cam McDaniel and Senior Amir Carlisle.

If he transferred, he would have sat out a year in order to play a year in 2015.

For Atkinson, that added up to leaving early for the NFL Draft. Atkinson will test well in the 2014 Combine in Indianapolis, if invited. He has the tools needed to be an excellent Running Back. If he cannot make an NFL team as a Running Back, he will be able to as a Returner.

In 2013, Atkinson rushed for 555 yards and 3 touchdowns. His best game was against Oklahoma when he had 14 carries for 148 yards and 1 touchdown.

George’s twin brother Josh’s future is still up in the air. It is the opinion of Slap the Sign that he will head to Championship Subdivision where he can play immediately.
