Notre Dame Basketball: Up-Hill Battle To Tournament Faces Irish

Notre Dame Basketball

Last night, the Irish dropped another ACC conference game to Florida State, 74-76. At 2-4 in ACC and 11-8 overall, the Irish face an up-hill battle to win a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

ESPN Bracketologist Joe Lundari currently has Notre Dame outside the NCAA Tournament. They currently have an RPI of 90th in the country.

The Irish have 12 games left in the season. Here are the opponents and projections:

  • @ Wake Forest (63)-*
  • Virginia (19)-L
  • Boston College (152)-W
  • Syracuse (6)-L
  • North Carolina (59)-*
  • Clemson (73)-*
  • @ Boston College (152)-W
  • @ Miami (76)-*
  • @ Virginia (19)-L
  • Georgia Tech (139)-W
  • Pittsburgh (12)-L
  • @ North Carolina (59)-*

Notre Dame still has enough talent to get into the tournament. However, they need to win enough games to do so. Notre Dame should win their games against Boston College and Georgia Tech. Their match ups against Virginia, Syracuse and Pittsburgh may be more difficult. However, if they can pull off victories against Wake Forest, North Carolina, Clemson and Miami, they could break in the tournament. At that point, they would have a 10-8 record in the ACC and a 19-12 record overall.

Notre Dame has one win against the RPI Top 50 (Duke 79-77) and three victories against the RPI Top 100 (Delaware, Indiana, Canisius). They have one bad lose against Georgia Tech (RPI 139th).

The Irish will likely land in the NIT this year despite all of the expectations. This is probably realistic because the loss of Jerian Grant. But, the slim losses this season will cut at Mike Brey if they do not make it.
