Notre Dame Football Recruiting
One year from now, Quarterback Blake Barnett and Offensive Linemen Tristen Hoge will join the Notre Dame football team as early enrollees.
This year, Wide Receiver Justin Brent and Defensive Linemen Andrew Trumbetti joined the Irish as early enrollees.
The mid-year enrollment options gives a player a unique opportunity to prepare both on the field and in the classroom. It is essentially a head start for anyone who does it. By the time the season kicks off, the player is essentially a Sophomore.
Blake Barnett will likely not compete for a starting position in 2015. But, he should have a great opportunity in 2016. The time he gains with an extra spring of practice will help him in that competition.
It is difficult for Offensive Linemen to come in early and start, regardless of whether they are mid-year enrollees or not. However, current Notre Dame Sophomore Steve Elmer was able to pull that exact feat this year. Hoge is just as talented as Elmer is so it is definitely a possibility.
The early enrollee option was instituted by former Notre Dame Head Coach Charlie Weis. However, former Notre Dame coach (and villain) Tyrone Willingham started the process to have this available for Notre Dame football players.
