Notre Dame Basketball: Brey on the Hot Seat?

Notre Dame Basketball

Yesterday, Notre Dame dropped another game in what was already a horrific season. In fact, it was the worst since the late ’90s and worst in Brey’s tenure at Notre Dame. For the first time under Brey, the Irish will not be headed to postseason play.

Fans and analysts have questioned Brey for his inability to win in the tournament. But, he has been very solid in the regular season. Brey has won 300 games. Only two other coaches (Phelps and Keogan) have won more. So, is it unimaginable that Brey is on the hot seat?

All signs point to Brey returning next year for his 14th season at Notre Dame. He will lose Atkins, Sherman and Knight but will add three talented young players in the class of 2014. Additionally, Jerian Grant is expected to return. This adds up to push for a return trip to the NCAA Tournament.

But, should Notre Dame fans expect more than this? The basketball program has a beautiful updated facility and will soon have a standalone practice facility. They play in one of the best conferences in the country. There are not a whole lot of reasons as to why this program could not grow into a team that pushes towards the Sweet 16 on a regular basis.

So, if not Mike Brey then who? Brey is ranked in the Top 50 of both wins and winning percentage. He is clearly one of the top coaches in the nation. Would Notre Dame be able to replace him with anyone better? Not likely.

However, that may not stop Swarbrick from trying.
