Notre Dame Football: Spring Practice Observations #3

Notre Dame Football

Notre Dame returned to the practice field on Wednesday for their 3rd practice of the spring.

It is clear that this year will emphasize some of the younger players on Notre Dame’s roster. Kelly noted Smith, Prosise, Fuller and Redfield in his press conference following practice.

Media was present during portions of Wednesday’s practice. Here are videos of the Irish in action:

Here are the observations from Wednesday’s practice:

  • Sophomore Quarterback Malik Zaire looks to be a smooth and natural runner but still needs to improve throwing the football.
  • Senior Running Back/Slot Receiver Amir Carlisle appears to be having a solid spring so far. He looked great in practice last year before breaking his collarbone. Carlisle started out as a frequent contributor in Notre Dame’s offense but faded as the season went forward. Will he have more of consistent role this year?
  • Junior John Turner appeared to be getting work with the first team. This is interesting development. To this point, Turner had not sniffed the field. But, the position switch from Safety to Outside Linebacker may be helping him greatly.
  • Senior Linebacker Joe Schmidt made an excellent interception by under cutting a seam route. This is what he can bring to Notre Dame on 3rd down and passing situations. He will struggle if he is an every down player due to his size.
