Notre Dame Football: Nick Martin Named To The Rimington Watch List

The Rimington Trophy Committee released a 64-man Watch List that includes Notre Dame Senior Center Nick Martin. The committee wrote:

The Rimington Trophy Committee has released its 2014 Spring Watch List, which includes 64 of the best centers in Division I football. The athletes included on this list have demonstrated excellence at the center position in the past and are predicted to do so again in the 2014-2015 season.

64 centers makes the list less prestigious. Essentially, the list features 50% of all centers in college football. However, Martin truly belongs and deserves recognition.

Martin played in 13 games in Notre Dame’s undefeated season. He started 11 games in 2013 before suffering a season ending knee injury against BYU. Martin did not participate in spring football.

The Offensive Line depends on the Notre Dame Senior Center to make the line calls and adjust the protections. Martin’s ability to make these calls assists the Quarterback in running the offense. Whether Everett Golson or Malik Zaire starts, they will not command the offense as well as Tommy Rees did. Therefore, Martin’s play is critical to the success of the 2014 offense.

Notre Dame opponents also feature Rimington Watch List candidates; Robert Kugler (Purdue), Graham Shuler (Stanford), Austin Barron (Florida State), Brandon Vitabile (Northwestern) and Jake Smith (Louisville).
