A scholarship may have opened up for Notre Dame on Sunday. And not in a positive way.
Notre Dame Wide Receiver Will Mahone (pictured right) was arrested under serious allegations in Mahoning County near Youngstown Ohio. Mahone was charged with disorderly conduct, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, intimidation and vandalism.
Injuries and position changes have limited Mahone in his two years at Notre Dame. Mahone committed to Notre Dame on September 30, 2011. According to Rivals.com, he was ranked as the 18th best Running Back and 197th best overall prospect in the country.
The school has not commented on Mahone’s arrest. Players were due back in South Bend this week for summer school and workouts.
UPDATE: According to the police report, officers were called to the scene of a fight. There, Mahone, highly intoxicated, was attempting to head-butt and punch vehicles as well as fight other people. When officers attempted to confront Mahone, he shouted verbal abuse at them including, ““(Expletive), you white piece of (expletive). Takes these cuffs off and I’ll kill you. I’ll (expletive) kill you.”
The University commented on Monday, “The University is aware of this incident and is confident that it will be handled in a prompt and professional manner through the criminal justice system. Internal discipline is handled privately, in accord with our own policies and federal law.”
