Notre Dame has not landed a 5-star Defensive Linemen (who actually played at Notre Dame) since the Fighting Irish landed Stephon Tuitt in the Class of 2011. The Fighting Irish have only landed the nation’s top prospect in the Rivals100 once. In 2007, Notre Dame landed Jimmy Clausen. The Fighting Irish Coaching Staff hopes to snag the nation’s top recruit in this year’s class Byron Cowart.
The coaching staff took a big leap towards landing Cowart on Tuesday when he visited Notre Dame. Cowart visited Notre Dame along with his high school teammate Quarterback Noah Johnson.
During his Junior season, Cowart collected 72 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries and 2 fumble recoveries for touchdown.
Rivals.com considers Cowart #1 at his position and in the nation. However, he is not the consensus #1 player by all recruiting services. 247Sports ranks Cowart as a 67th in the country. Cowart is ranked 21st by Scout and 5th by ESPN.
The Fighting Irish are probably playing catch up with Cowart. Hopefully, this visit secures an official for Notre Dame in the future. Cowart’s recruitment will probably go until National Signing Day.
Notre Dame needs to land a top line Defensive End in this class. Landing top flight Defensive Linemen is the only way Notre Dame will return to the National Title Game.
