Incoming Freshman Linebacker Nile Sykes will reportedly transfer from Notre Dame. The sources and outlets who first reported the impending transfer did not name a reason for the transfer. However, he will apparently transfer following summer classes. Indiana has been rumored as a destination for Sykes.
However, Sykes tweeted that he was still a student at the University of Notre Dame. That tweet was deleted by Sykes later. There is no official word from Sykes or the University to whether Sykes will indeed transfer.
Sykes, a former three-star recruit, tallied 80 tackles, 22 tackles for a loss and 12 sacks as a senior at Montini Catholic High School. He was considered the 20th best Inside Linebacker by Rivals. 247Sports consider him the 34th best Outside Linebacker. He committed to Notre Dame on December 15, 2013.
Notre Dame was not depending on Sykes starting or playing a significant role at the Mike Linebacker position. The Irish will likely depend on incoming Freshman Linebacker Nyles Morgan. However, Sykes may have been able to play on Special Teams.
This is a bright side to this occurrence. Notre Dame is currently extremely limited in the amount of scholarships it can offer down the stretch in this recruiting cycle. This frees up a scholarship for the 2015 class.
