Notre Dame Football: Martin, Koyack Land On Early Award Watch Lists

Yesterday, Notre Dame football players KeiVarae Russell, Jaylon Smith and Everett Golson landed on pre-season award watch lists. Today, two more Notre Dame players found their way on to a watch list.

Ben Koyack and Nick Martin were named to the John Mackey Award and the Rimington Trophy. The John Mackey Award is handed out to the Top Tight End in the nation. In 2012, Tyler Eifert brought home the Mackey Award. The Rimington Trophy is awarded to the top Center in the nation.

Two years into his career, Koyack had not lived up to his lofty recruiting billing. In 2011 and 2012, Koyack only collected 4 receptions for 44 yards. He was surpassed by underclassmen Troy Niklas in 2012 and 2013. However, he did step up his game in 2013. He caught 10 receptions for 171 yards and 3 touchdowns. He is expected to be one of Notre Dame’s top targets in 2014.

Nick Martin became the anchor of Notre Dame’s Offensive Line. In 2013, he started 11 games for the Fighting Irish but was lost during the BYU game due to a knee injury. Prior to becoming a full time starter, the Irish Center played in all 13 games in 2012. Martin may be Notre Dame’s best Offensive Linemen in 2014.

Other watch lists to be named this week are:

Wed., July 9: Lou Groza Award/Ray Guy Award
Thurs., July 10: Bronko Nagurski Trophy/Outland Trophy
