Notre Dame Football: Counting Down Notre Dame’s Starters: #7 Everett Golson

This year, Notre Dame’s Football team will be one of the youngest that Brian Kelly has ever had at Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are making slight adjustments on Offense and Defense. The Defense will likely operate with three Cornerbacks most of the time. Here are Notre Dame’s players ranked 1-22, continuing with # 7

Everett Golson – Senior – Quarterback

Perhaps the biggest returning starter for this Notre Dame team is a player that has not been in a game situation since the 2012 BCS Championship game. After serving a year long suspension for academic violations Everett Golson returns to the Irish this year as the presumed starter at quarterback. During his time away from football Golson spent his time working with quarterback guru George Whitfield in California. He also spent time in his time away building himself physically by bulking up to 208lbs and looks like a better player all around.

Expectations are going to be high for the Notre Dame offense this year due to the abundance of talent at all the skill positions. There is no shortage of options for Golson to throw to this season. After watching the first few practices during fall camp it is clear that Golson is a much more confident quarterback. You can see that he has taken the reins of this offense and is learning how to direct it properly. Now this is not to say that Everett is the clear cut starter this year, the young lefty Malik Zaire is going to push Golson this fall for the starting gig. When it comes to the opening game against Rice you can all, but guarantee number 5 will be lining up behind Nick Martin

Brian Kelly has been quoted in saying that “Everett kind of rode the bus to the Nation Championship game” during the 2012 undefeated season. This year Brian Kelly will ask Everett to drive this team to the promise land. Look for the passing offense to make a huge jump in production this year. More importantly the run game will be greatly improved with the dual threat ability Golson brings that this team missed last year with Tommy Rees.
