This year, Notre Dame’s Football team will be one of the youngest that Brian Kelly has ever had at Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are making slight adjustments on Offense and Defense. The Defense will likely operate with three Cornerbacks most of the time. Here are Notre Dame’s players ranked 1-22, continuing with #4
Sheldon Day – Junior – Defensive Line
Sheldon Day spent his first two years of his career living in the shadows of Louis Nix and Stephon Tuitt’s high profiles. This is not to say that Sheldon did not make an impact of his own. During his first two years Sheldon Day has a total of 56 tackles – 2 sacks – and 9 tackles for a loss. In Bob Diaco’s defensive scheme Sheldon was played out of his ideal position and spent a majority of his time at Defensive End.
In the new 4-3 defense brought in by Coach VanGorder, Sheldon will finally be able to play inside at a more natural position. Listed at 6’2″ – 285lbs, Day has the athletic ability to explode through gaps and cause havoc in the backfield. With KeiVarae Russell and Ishaq Williams suspended from all football related activities Day is going to have to step up and be a leader on the defense. He will be the only upperclassman starting on the defensive line if these suspensions are held up by the university.
When I watch Sheldon play I cannot help but think of Aaron Donald, the current starter inside for the St. Louis Rams. Both Donald and Day have identical builds physically, mentally, and style of play. Each of whom are a bit on the lighter side of the ideal defensive lineman by today’s standards. What they lack in size they more than make up with explosiveness and strength. Sheldon Day will make a huge impact this year in VanGorders scheme and I would not be surprised to see double digit sacks this year for him.
