After stating that he would likely to make the decision by Wednesday, Kelly announced Austin Collinsworth, Sheldon Day, Nick Martin and Cam McDaniel as captains for the 2014 Notre Dame Football season. None of these captains come as much of a surprise.
All four players became vocal leaders over the past year. Any one who follows Notre Dame Football knows that each player made a significant impact on the psyche of the team.
As viewed on “Strong and True”, following the suspension of four teammates, 5th-year Senior Austin Collinsworth fired the team up prior to practice, stating, “when it gets tough, we just go harder!” Collinsworth helps the defense properly align themselves on each play.
Junior Defensive Tackle Sheldon Day texted all the Defensive Linemen to tell them that they would not be the weak link on the defense.
Senior Center Nick Martin voices his opinion on every play by necessity. He calls out the protections and the fronts of the defense. Also, during the 30-minute prelude to Notre Dame Football, “Strong and True”, Martin laid into Notre Dame Sophomore Right Tackle Steve Elmer.
Senior Running Back Cam McDaniel grew into his vocal role. McDaniel stood up into front of the team following a practice at Culver Academy and apologized for not being a vocal leader. Both Sophomore Running Backs Tarean Folston and Greg Bryant stated that McDaniel was crucial in their development.
Despite having four players with “C”s on their jerseys, Brian Kelly stated during his Tuesday presser that his team had several leaders. Joe Schmidt, Jaylon Smith, Everett Golson and Ben Koyack are some notable names who were not named as captains. Does this mean Notre Dame will have a more successful season in 2014 than in 2013? Possibly. Notre Dame struggled with strong leadership last year.
