Archbishop Alter High School Running Back and Defensive Back Nick Coleman committed to Notre Dame on June 12th. Coleman received offers from Akron, Duke, Illinois, Indiana, Miami (OH), Michigan State and Pittsburgh. The two-way player checks in at 6’0″ 170 lbs. Many different recruiting services, including Rivals, 247Sports and ESPN, consider Coleman a three-star prospect.
Coleman began his 2014 campaign on Friday night against the Fairmont Firebirds. He and his Alter Knights soundly defeated the Firebirds 42-12.
Coleman took limited snaps at Cornerback. Alter appeared to use him at that position when the Offense was in obvious passing situations. While at Cornerback, Coleman only saw one ball threw his ball. As can be viewed in the video above, he batted away the ball on that play.
The Senior-captain Running Back took most of his snaps at Running Back. Coleman failed to make the big explosive run. But he consistently gained 5 to 10 yards.
Overall, Coleman looks like a smooth, long athlete similar to KeiVarae Russell. Coleman needs to improve his technique to be an effective starter at the next level. Currently, when on defense, Coleman utilizes his speed and athleticism to stay with defenders. There is currently not much of a back peddle, hip-flip and proper use of hands.
Coleman is the perfect type of recruit for Notre Dame at this stage. Notre Dame’s cupboard at Cornerback is currently stocked with talent. Coleman will have time to develop into a starter before being thrust into a role where he needs to play.
