Notre Dame Haiku: Volume X

Notre Dame’s fifth most played football opponent, began in 1909

Welcome back to Notre Dame Haiku on Slap the Sign! Friends, it’s been a few weeks since we last collectively gathered around the internet fireplace to share our Notre Dame Haiku talents, but at least we did things like get married, join a new faith, and give birth to the sweetest prince in all of Christendom.

IT’S PITT WEEK!

Maybe that doesn’t excite some of you, but that “some” are the ones I make fun of as being pompous and just plain ignorant. The Pitt game is a lot like Notre Dame’s series with Michigan State.

  • There’s a ton of hard and maybe not so legal hard-hitting.
  • A general dislike for one another.
  • Inexcusable losses by the Irish in the craziest fashion.
  • Pass interference.
  • Old fans.
  • History.

Unlike the Michigan State game, there is (sadly for me and my fetish) no traveling trophy for this game. Perhaps a steel keg of Guinness with shamrocks and paws- BUT I DIGRESS…

The Irish have played Pitt A LOT. From Wikipedia:

"The Fighting Irish’s longtime series with the Pittsburgh Panthers, Notre Dame’s fifth most played football opponent, began in 1909 and there have been no more than two consecutive seasons without two teams meeting each other except between 1913–29, 1938–42, and 1979–81. Since 1982, the Panthers have remained a relative fixture on the schedule. Notre Dame leads the series 47–21–1. The longest game in Notre Dame history occurred between the two schools in 2008, when Pitt defeated ND in a record 4 overtimes by a field goal. The 2012 contest saw Notre Dame erase a 20-6 deficit in the fourth quarter and force overtime. The Irish won 29–26 in triple overtime after the Panthers narrowly missed a game-winning field goal in the second overtime period."

I’m excited, and I invite you and the Pitt faithful to get this game- this game with the ancient kickoff time of noon, a proper jolt. Haiku it up y’all! Scroll on down to the comment section and drop your favorite 17 syllables. I’ll post any from Twitter here that uses the hashtag #NDHaikusPitt. I’ll drop the best from each fanbase on the Anti-Peview. Here’s one to get you started:
