Notre Dame Football: First Thoughts On Syracuse

facebooktwitterreddit

Once again, Notre Dame heads to a neutral site to play the Syracuse Orange.

This series feels much deeper than it actually is. Notre Dame and Syracuse have met only seven times, but four of those meetings have come in the past 13 years. Syracuse holds a respectable 3-4 record against Notre Dame with two of those wins coming in the last four meetings (a butt whipping in the Carrier Dome and an embarrassing disaster in 2008 at Notre Dame on senior day).

Instead of this game being played inside the unholy Carrier Dome, Syracuse (and mutually agreed upon Notre Dame) will play this game at the Meadowlands. yet another neutral site game for the Irish and despite Syracuse being the “home” team, Notre Dame will most undoubtedly have a much larger fanbase at the game than the Orange.

This begs the question… What the hell is Syracuse thinking? These type of games are right up Notre Dame’s alley, and the Irish feel quite comfortable in this role. Conversely, Notre Dame rarely plays in a dome (okay like never), and maybe that’s just enough to help the Orange.

That’s probably a bit of a stretch (the whole dome thing) but you have to wonder why Syracuse is selling its soul to try and be “New York’s college team.” Let me tell you something Syracuse… New York doesn’t really care.

Maybe the next time Notre Dame and Syracuse play against each other, and it’s an Orange “home game” maybe, just maybe it will be in the dome. Until then, Notre Dame fans will continue to take your “home game away from home” and turn it into their rental property for the night.

Slap The Sign will have more on the Syracuse game and the rest of the schedule in our Schedule preview in June.
