How should we react to Corey Robinson’s decision to leave the game?

News has broken that Corey Robinson, Notre Dame wide receiver, has decided to step away from the game due to multiple concussions. The response to this news around the college football hemisphere and by ND fans has been encouraging. Everyone realizes just how bright of a person Robinson is and how he will be just fine without football. Which is true, he is the Notre Dame student body president, focused on academics, and of course is the son of David Robinson, which is never failed to be mentioned during a game.

The question we need to be asking is not how will Robinson be without football, but what will Robinson’s exit mean to the game? Robinson is leaving the game to protect is health from the effects of multiple concussions. Something that has been brought to life recently is chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. The concerns of CTE went mainstream after the movie Concussion came out.

CTE, which is not recognized by some as a football related injury by some, is something that brings up a lot of concern to the game. Some ask, how do we protect our players while others elect to stay away from the sport in all.

Will this be a trend in all levels of football? We have seen some impact at the professional level where players have decided to retire early. How many will follow Robinson and step away from the game? How many parents will look at this trend and decide that they don’t want their child to play in high school or even pee wee?

CTE is scary and is not going away, and we need more research on it to protect our players. As fans of the game we have to look away from the fact the Robinson will be just fine with out football, and ask will football be just fine without Robinson?

I would never want to put a player in harm’s way and I applaud Robinson on his decision, which couldn’t have been an easy one, but this could be the start of something big. We need to look at why Corey Robinson made this decision and what we can take away from it.
