The thought of any of these five heartbreaking games will make any Irish fan cringe.

While Brian Kelly has had the most successful tenure of any Notre Dame coach since Lou Holtz, he really hasn’t picked up that signature win. One could argue the 2012 game at Oklahoma was a pretty huge win, but that wasn’t the best Oklahoma team we’ve seen. It just seems like there has been of bunch of games where they almost got job done. There has been too many games where Notre Dame fell just short of a monumental win because of either just an epic collapse, a controversial call or some combination of both.

Over the last six seasons it seems like we get either one or sometimes two games like that, but surely you can count on Notre Dame playing in one game thats comes down to the wire and falling just short. Hopefully they can buck that trend this season because while the schedule isn’t filled with cupcake teams it’s still one that poses some challenges.

This list wasn’t the easiest to come up with because sadly there are more than five heartbreaking games one can rattle off. So without any further ado, here are our top five most heartbreaking games of the Brian Kelly era.
