With a new defense being installed in South Bend with a new focus on style of players on that side of the ball, staff has been keying in on certain types as of late.

There has been many offers sent out to rangy linebacker/safety types, long athletic defensive ends and stout yet mobile defensive tackles.

Since our last offer break down, Texas defensive end Max Wright, there has been four more offers sent out to ’18 recruits on the defensive side of the ball.

Let’s have a look at Channing Tindall of South Carolina.

Although the consensus within recruiting services is that Channing Tindall has a ways to go to be considered a big-time recruit, his offer list says otherwise.

He currently holds offers from Auburn, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina among others.

He also had big time numbers in ’16. In his junior season, he racked up 121 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 8 sacks and 3 forced fumbles in top tier 5A football in South Carolina.

I notice he has a Wake Forest offer. I’m assuming Mike Elko and Clark Lea have been on this kid since they were out that way, last year.

Tindall is an interesting prospect in that instead of being the common defensive end-outside linebacker hybrid, he plays end and inside linebacker.

First of all, Tindall is an excellent tackler. He shows superb form and shoots his hips towards the ball carrier and stops them dead in their tracks on every attempt.

At defensive end, he lines up on both the strong and weak sides which is common for a high school defensive end. He shows good strength to get around the edge.

He does need to work on his get off and continue working on some hand techniques to get off blocks, but the signs are there that he should be a good college athlete and with some good coaching, he could be more effective off the edge.

Tindall is a little rigid in a sense, but he makes up for it by taking really good angles to the ball carrier and sets off in his pursuit with authority. I like his style of play and almost want to call it “old school.”

At inside linebacker, i see more of the same. He takes very good angles, shows good field vision and awareness and because he’s such a great tackler, he does really well at the position for his football team.

That being said, Tindall is more suited for the defensive end position. He is only tipping the scales at around 210 pounds right now but he has a great frame that should help him grow well over the 230 pound range.

He doesn’t quite show the fluidity and extra athleticism it takes to play inside linebacker at the college level and there’s nothing on tape that suggests he’s good in coverage.

I like Tindall’s film. He looks like the type who doesn’t jump out at you with measurables and fancy footwork etc. I thinkk he’s the type to just quietly rack up tackles and play good football.

Considering he probably has a relationship with Elko and Lea, look for them to get him on campus for a visit. If that happens, he could be considering the blue and gold.
