Justin Birdsong is a lesser-known cornerback who plays in Georgia’s talent-loaded 6A division and shows that he can compete at a very high level. The 6’0, 175 lb. talent announced yesterday that he will be in attendance at Notre Dame’s Blue and Gold game on April 22.

I caught up with Birdsong today to get his thoughts on Notre Dame.

“I’ve been watching Notre Dame for a very long time. I probably started back when I was 6 or 7. I’ve been watching them a lot ever since.'” said Birdsong.

I asked him about his recent contact with Notre Dame and he explained to me that he has heard from multiple staff members including the head coach.

“On Monday, coach Peloquin called me and then I shot him all my information,” he said. “He told me that he really liked my film and that he would get all the other coaches to watch my film. The head coach followed me, coach Kelly, and coach Lyght followed me a couple of hours later.”

“Coach Lyght told me to give him a call yesterday. So I called him and he said they really like me as a staff and like my film and like how I play, my character and all of that and they’re thinking about offering me and asked what my interests are in Notre Dame,” said Birdsong.

He explained to me that he could see an offer coming during next month’s visit to South Bend. “I think they’re going to offer on my visit when I go up there for the spring game on April 22,” explained Birdsong.

I asked Birdsong what he is looking forward to accomplishing during his visit. “Just talking to the coaches, meeting some of the players and seeing that the coaches are actually interested in me, not just going places for no reason,” explained Birdsong.

Birdsong’s recruitment has been heating up as of late with several schools contacting him. One of Notre Dame’s rivals will also be hosting the talented cornerback in April.

“I just got an offer from Appalachian State today. I’ve got Central Michigan, Navy and Howard (offers). I’m visiting Stanford next Saturday April 1st for their junior day. I think they’re going to offer me,” said Birdsong.

One thing I noticed about Birdsong is that he is going about his recruitment in a manner which wins and losses aren’t the biggest factor. He is more interested in schools who are truly excited about having him join their program.

“I have Eastern Kentucky, they call me a lot. Arkansas State talks to me a lot. Ball State talks to me a little bit. I talk to Georgia Southern pretty often, so, I mean, a couple schools. Not anything extravagant, not any huge numbers. All those schools are really interested in me and that’s what I’m looking for,” explained Birdsong.

Considering he has several high academic school offers, I asked Birdsong if he was a strong student and if he knew what he would like to study in college. “Yes sir. I have a 3.5 GPA. My top 3 are chemical engineering, communication and sports management,” he explained.

Notre Dame is looking to add more cornerbacks to join Kalon Gervin in their ’18 cornerback class. Although Birdsong is under-the-radar, he is talented and will soon be in many more discussions in the recruiting world.
